Long before suffragists or Steinem, Jane Austen revolutionized the way the world viewed women with her iconoclastic heroines and intimate portraits of women's lives. Join us as Jasmine A. Stirling, author of the picture book biography, A Most Clever Girl: How Jane Austen Discovered her Voice, discusses how the rights of women—in particular the ability to create financial independence—have evolved since the Regency period. She'll explain the devastating impact of these limited rights on Austen’s own life and work, which left her dependent on the charity of her brothers after her father's death. A reading from Jasmine’s book and Q&A will follow.
